Ronaldo's Saudi Future Hangs in Balance as PIF Pushes for Al Hilal or Al Ahli Move

Cristiano Ronaldo’s future in Saudi Arabia has become a matter of national importance, with the country’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) stepping in to secure his stay. The 40-year-old Al Nassr captain, whose contract expires in June 2025, is being courted by Saudi giants Al Hilal and Al Ahli, according to Marca. The PIF, overseeing $930 billion in assets and controlling several Saudi Pro League clubs, sees Ronaldo’s presence as vital for the league’s global growth, especially with the FIFA Club World Cup on the horizon.
Ronaldo’s tenure at Al Nassr, which began in December 2022, has been a mixed bag. Despite elevating the league’s profile and doubling Al Nassr’s attendance, the club has failed to secure major titles, finishing 13 points behind champions Al Hilal in the 2024/25 season. Frustrations have mounted after consecutive AFC Champions League exits, prompting speculation of a move. Al Hilal, Asia’s most decorated club, previously rejected Ronaldo in May 2025, favoring younger talent like Victor Osimhen, while Al Ahli, the reigning ACL champions, offers a fresh challenge. Ronaldo’s decision could reshape Saudi football’s landscape as the PIF doubles down on its investment.
