Ricky Kambuaya's Evolving Role: From Midfield Engine to Impact Sub for Indonesia

Ricky Kambuaya has remained a consistent presence in the Indonesian national team despite changes in coaches and player rotations. While he was once a central figure in the team’s midfield under Shin Tae-yong, he now finds himself more frequently coming off the bench. Currently playing for Dewa United, Kambuaya continues to contribute, though no longer as a regular starter, but rather as a valuable impact substitute.
Kambuaya first made his international debut in July 2021 and quickly became a key component of Indonesia’s midfield. His dynamic playstyle, characterized by aggressive forward runs and energy from the second line, earned him a vital role during the AFF Cup 2020 and the early stages of Asian Cup qualifiers. However, his minutes on the field gradually decreased, especially during the 2023 Asian Cup, where he made only two appearances.
The increased competition in midfield, especially with the arrival of naturalized players such as Thom Haye, Joey Pelupessy, and Ivar Jenner, has reshaped the pecking order. Each brings distinct qualities—Haye as a tempo-setter, Pelupessy with his defensive discipline, and Jenner as a box-to-box presence. In contrast, Kambuaya offers a more direct, attacking approach, specializing in driving forward with the ball and disrupting opposing defenses.
Although no longer the midfield linchpin, Kambuaya’s role remains crucial in specific match situations. His ability to change the tempo and provide attacking thrust off the bench gives Indonesia a tactical edge. Matches like the one against Bahrain highlighted his influence, even in limited minutes, proving that while his role has transformed, his value to the national team is far from diminished.
