Manchester United Eye Goalkeeping Shake-Up with Marco Carnesecchi Move

Manchester United are reportedly set to overhaul their goalkeeping department, with plans to offload Andre Onana and pursue Atalanta’s Marco Carnesecchi, according to transfer insider Alfredo Pedulla. The Red Devils are prepared to table a £34 million bid for the 24-year-old Italian, who has emerged as a promising talent in Serie A. This move comes as Onana, signed for £43.8 million from Inter Milan in 2023, has faced scrutiny for inconsistent performances, including a high-profile error during a 4-3 Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich.
Carnesecchi, who showcased his potential with eight clean sheets in 20 Serie B matches during a 2020-21 loan at Cremonese, is seen as a long-term investment under manager Ruben Amorim. Despite limited senior starts, his selection as Italy’s under-19 first-choice goalkeeper in 2019 highlights his pedigree. Atalanta, however, may demand closer to £40-42 million, given their strong negotiating stance.
This potential transfer aligns with United’s active 2025 summer window, following the £62.5 million signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolves. As the club seeks to rebound from a disappointing Premier League campaign, the pursuit of Carnesecchi signals a strategic shift to bolster their defensive line with youthful talent. Negotiations are ongoing, with no official bid confirmed yet.
