Wayne Rooney Signs £800k Deal to Become BBC's "Match of the Day" Regular, Potentially Ending Coaching Career

Exclusive report by Clemmie Moodie, Assistant Editor at The Sun
Wayne Rooney has signed a two-year, £800,000 contract to become a regular pundit on Match of the Day.
The 39-year-old former England star will officially join the show later this month after making a guest appearance.
He has also signed on for the BBC’s 2026 World Cup coverage in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada, with his contract including an option for a two-year extension.
This move could mark the end of Rooney’s coaching career, as he and his wife Coleen are set to become British television’s new "golden couple."
With Gary Lineker stepping down after 26 years as host, Rooney will rotate presenting duties with Alex Scott, Mark Chapman, and Gabby Logan.
A source revealed: “Wayne is a natural pundit—passionate, witty, and knows every aspect of the game. He still loves football and gets along brilliantly with everyone on screen. He’s incredibly likable and has already impressed, as seen in the glowing social media feedback. Wayne will be a key figure in next year’s World Cup coverage, which is set to be a huge success. And after Gary’s departure, he’ll bring much-needed expertise to Match of the Day. Everyone, including Sports Director Alex Kay-Jelski, is thrilled to have him. It’s a fantastic signing.”
