David Luiz Signs with Pafos FC in Surprise European Return

Veteran Brazilian defender David Luiz has made a surprising return to European football, signing with Cypriot First Division side Pafos FC on a contract running until 2027. The 38-year-old, renowned for his stints with Chelsea and Arsenal, joins the club after a three-year tenure with Flamengo in Brazil, marking a notable chapter in his illustrious career.
Luiz, who boasts over 50 caps for Brazil and a UEFA Champions League title with Chelsea in 2012, brings a wealth of experience to Pafos FC. The club, formed in 2014 through a merger of local teams, has steadily risen in prominence, securing top goalscorer titles in the 2018-19, 2022-23, and 2023-24 seasons. His arrival is seen as a strategic move to bolster the team’s ambitions in the UEFA Conference League, where Pafos recently reached the last 16 in the 2024-25 campaign.
Research from the Journal of Sports Sciences (2022) highlights that veteran players can maintain high performance levels into their late 30s with tailored training, suggesting Luiz’s signing could enhance Pafos’ competitiveness. Club officials expressed optimism, citing his leadership and tactical acumen as key assets for the upcoming season.
