Son Heung-min Joins LAFC in Record-Breaking MLS Transfer

August 7, 2025 – South Korean football icon Son Heung-min has officially signed with Los Angeles FC (LAFC) from Tottenham Hotspur in a historic move, marking the highest transfer fee in Major League Soccer (MLS) history. The deal, valued at approximately $26 million with potential add-ons, was confirmed on Wednesday, with Son’s contract running through 2027 and including options until June 2029.
The 33-year-old forward, who spent a decade at Spurs, departs after scoring 173 goals and providing 94 assists in 454 appearances, cementing his legacy as one of the club’s all-time greats. His recent triumph in the 2025 UEFA Europa League highlighted his enduring quality, though Tottenham’s decision to release him signals a strategic shift under new management.
LAFC, currently sixth in the Western Conference, aims to leverage Son’s global appeal and skill to elevate their competitive edge. The move reunites him with former Spurs teammate Hugo Lloris, who joined LAFC last year. This transfer reflects MLS’s growing influence in attracting top-tier talent, following precedents like Lionel Messi’s arrival at Inter Miami. Son expressed excitement for the “new challenge,” promising to contribute to LAFC’s trophy aspirations as the team prepares for their next match against Chicago Fire FC on Saturday.
